Gallery Céline

6 December 2019 – 10 January 2020

Opens 6 December 6–8pm

Recent Activity is proud to present the second part of an exchange with Céline.

Céline is an independent artist run gallery in Glasgow. Operating out of a shared flat by Céline Amendola, Adam Lewis Jacob and Michael White, their intent has been to diversify the make-up of Glasgow’s art scene by hosting exhibitions and performances by emerging local and international peers who are not currently afforded a voice by the city’s established curatorial milieu. Through curatorial takeovers and a casual approach to “directorship”, they cultivate a sensibility of approach in place of a style shunning the notion that a curatorial position be used as a platform for authorial agendas to be played out through the works of others.

Céline Amendola (b.1990) is a Swiss artist whose work explores the potential of art to critique our interpretative habits. The use of varied techniques and media relating to cultures of craft reoccur in her practice to interrogate their cultural and historic background.

Recent exhibitions include Celine at Mauve, Vienna (2018), Telephone Arabe, Visarte, Lausanne (2018), Function, Mount Florida Gallery, Glasgow (2017), Collective Memory, 28 Scott Ave, Brooklyn (2016), Sunday Salon, Open House Art Festival, Glasgow (2015), Accrochage, MCB-A, Lausanne (2014)

Adam Lewis Jacob (b.1985) lives and works in Glasgow. Recent exhibitions include New Work Series, LUX, London; British Film and Video, Studio 55, Seoul, Korea and ANTIPHON, Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2016, India. In 2020 Adam will present his work at Peak, London and Vivid Projects, Birmingham.

Michael White (b.1987) uses his practice to question shifting dynamics in the ideologies that define our contemporary political context. Using appropriated imagery from contemporary mainstream media and readymade forms to reconfigure existing syntactical structures, his aim is to subvert prevalent, often reductive readings of events, favouring an exploration of underlying principles which shape the means by which we construct a sense of value.

Recent exhibitions include Sipgate GmbH, Dusseldorf (2019), Che La, Buenos Aires (2019), Castlefield Gallery, Manchester (2018), Glasgow International (2018), Autocentre @ KINDL, Berlin (2018), Artist Club Coffre Fort, Brussels (2017), Village Unhu, Harare (2016).

To realise this exhibition, Céline Amendola has been generously supported by the Swiss Cultural Fund UK.
